Smile is a memoir graphic novel that centers around Telgemeier's traumatic orthodontic experience. Although this book has been making the popularity rounds on YouTube and in other YA circles, it didn't really appeal to me until a booktuber I follow, who isn't a reader of YA books, mentioned a few things that piqued my interest/5(K).

In SMILE, through incidents both meaningful and trivial that span the course of several years, we watch author and illustrator Raina Telgemeier grow up. Readers will enjoy figuring out that The Little Mermaid influenced Raina's future as a cartoonist, and they may relate to how Raina can always find comfort in the art room at school.5/5.

Smile is such a good book, it takes you on a journey through Raina Telgameir's life. I love the artwork and find that the comic book fomat makes the book much more interesting. Some people say that it's not appropriate for ages because theres kissing and some /5(K).

The story starts off when Raina is years old, in the 6th grade and takes us on a four year journey. While racing home with her friends one day after Girl Scouts, Raina trips and knocks out her front two teeth.Smile Raina Telgemeier, who is the main character of the book.

The novel spans from sixth grade to high school. She came back from her friends house and had to take a huuuuuuge diarrhea but tripped and fell hard.

After the serious fall she injures her teeth, it takes years of dental drama to get her smile back to normal., Amara is Raina's younger sister who often can get quite annoying but.Smile is an excellent example of how the graphic novel medium can be more than the sum of its parts, with the text and images working together in the "show don't tell" style.

Catty dialogue of pre-teen girls show their true characters rather than outright labeling them bad friends/5(85).
